Monks, Birds & Jedi
‘I can’t believe they let us shoot there, it is so beautiful’ - JJ Abrams, Director
Walk in the footsteps of 6th century hermit monks and Star Wars Jedi on the UNESCO world heritage site, Skellig Michael. Featured as Luke Skywalker’s secret hideout in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, these towering sea crags rising from the Atlantic Ocean were the chosen destination for a small group of ascetic monks who, in their pursuit of greater union with God, withdrew from civilization to this remote and inaccessible place.
The island is home to enigmatic and colorful puffins, who spend their summers there, breeding and fattening their chicks. Listen to the melodic bird calls from May when the puffins and many other seabirds including shearwaters, petrels, fulmars and kittiwakes compete for nest space on this small island. A limited number of tourists are allowed to climb the precipitous stone walkways during summer to protect its unique archaeology and nature.
